Can a dentist diagnose sleep apnea?

Dentists aren’t permitted to diagnose sleep apnea. Instead, a sleep physician can make a proper diagnosis after the patient has undergone a sleep study at a designated sleep center. However, Dr. Slobodinsky can still do some screening and provide you with a comfortable treatment plan for sleep apnea. Here at our Philadelphia office, we offer oral appliances as an alternative to CPAP to alleviate snoring and sleep apnea symptoms.

What happens during a sleep study consultation?

During your sleep study consultation, you’ll simply fall asleep at the clinic in a private and secured room while your physician makes sure that the test goes accordingly. Your experience will also depend on what type of test you choose to take. If you opt for an at-home test, you’ll be able to sleep in your own bed while hooked up to the monitoring equipment. When you’re finished with the test, you’ll return it to your physician for processing.

What should I bring to my first sleep apnea consultation?

When you visit our Philadelphia office for your first sleep apnea appointment, we ask that you bring the following:

  • A driver’s license or valid form of ID
  • Your insurance card
  • Your sleep study records
  • Any additional medical history, including prior illnesses, hospitalization, or surgeries

Dr. Slobodinsky will use this information to determine which treatment option will be most effective in treating your sleep apnea symptoms.

What treatment option is right for me?

Dr. Slobodinsky will use the results of your sleep study and take into account your medical history to determine which treatment option is right for you to tackle your sleep apnea. During your initial consultation, he’ll help you create a personalized treatment plan that best addresses your symptoms as well as compliments your lifestyle. Dr. Slobodinsky will also be more than happy to answer any additional questions you may have.
